Outside the classroom

You'll have opportunities to connect with professional researchers at math conferences and explore career paths in mathematics. You can also build your communication and leadership skills by tutoring fellow students one-on-one through the General Academic Tutoring Center. Many math majors support other Pacificans as they work through general math courses鈥攁 great way to reinforce your own knowledge while helping others succeed. 

Pacific math club

Pacific鈥檚 Math Club offers a welcoming space to explore your interests, connect with peers and grow your skills outside the classroom. The club hosts regular social events and thought-provoking discussions focused on math theory, problem-solving and real-world applications. 

Three-year option

You have the option to earn your BS/BA degree in three years. Follow an accelerated course plan and you could shave a year off your undergraduate years. That means significant savings on tuition and a jumpstart in your career.

The difference between mathematics and applied mathematics degrees

Mathematics degree (BS/BA)

 A mathematics degree centers on abstract reasoning, logic and theoretical problem-solving, and equips you for careers in research, academia, cryptography, data analysis or advanced study in mathematics, computer science and law. 

Applied mathematics (BS)

An applied mathematics degree focuses on using mathematical methods to solve real-world problems in science, engineering, business and technology, which prepares you for careers in data analysis, finance, software development and research or graduate study in quantitative fields. 

What can you do with a math degree?

It鈥檚 common to associate math degrees with teaching, but that鈥檚 just one option. You can work in data science, finance, engineering, medicine and even animation. A math degree can help you develop your logical and analytic thinking to translate real-world problems into math-based solutions.

Oscar Avalos has always enjoyed numbers and puzzles. He came to Pacific with a desire to study pure mathematics, but an invitation from his professor to attend a math conference led him to a prestigious internship at the Chan-Zuckerberg Bio Hub, where he discovered his passion for biomathematics.

Teaching Credential Track

If you wish to qualify to teach mathematics at the secondary level, you should complete the Single Subject Credential in the social sciences. Ask you adviser or the department chair for information on specific course requirements.  For other credential requirements, you should consult faculty in Benerd College.

Noyce Scholars
Pacific Noyce Scholars Program

The PacNoyce Scholars Program provides scholarships and other support for STEM majors at Pacific who become teachers in high-needs school districts, such as Stockton.

You could be eligible for the Robert Noyce Teachers Scholarship worth up to $13,750 a year, for juniors and seniors or $20,000 for the final MA/teaching credential year.
