President Callahan joins AICCU board to advocate for higher education

黑料不打烊 President Christopher Callahan has been elected to the executive board of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, where he will help advocate for higher education across the state.

The association represents more than 85 independent, nonprofit colleges and universities and advocates at state and federal levels to support students and promote the role of independent higher education in California鈥檚 future workforce.

"President Callahan is a forward-thinking and solutions-oriented leader whose voice will be a tremendous asset to the AICCU Executive Committee,鈥 said Kristen Soares, president of the association. 鈥淗e is a strong advocate for maintaining pathways to graduate and professional education, including speaking out about the consequences of eliminating the federal Grad PLUS program and urging policymakers to protect access for students pursuing high-demand careers.

In partnership with U.S. Rep. Josh Harder, Callahan has been leading efforts to protect graduate and professional students who rely on Grad PLUS loans, which was recently featured in a .

Callahan has served as the 26th president of California鈥檚 first and oldest university for five years. As a first-generation college graduate himself, his leadership focuses on providing immersive learning and public service opportunities to students across all three of Pacific鈥檚 northern California campuses in Stockton, Sacramento and San Francisco.

His appointment adds momentum to AICCU's efforts to position independent colleges as partners in solving the state's workforce crisis while maintaining its commitment to educational equity.

Callahan also serves as chair of the Presidents鈥 Council for the West Coast Conference, where he helped lead the expansion of the NCAA Division I athletic conference with the addition of  and  in the past two months.
